An efficient outdoor heater begins with a coherent energy contract. It is easy to focus only on the appliance, its power and its design, while forgetting the electricity plan that supplies it. Yet this is often where avoidable costs are hidden. Before adding a patio heater, it is worth checking what you really pay for, how much power you need and how often the heater will actually be used.
Open energy markets, real price differences
In many European markets, households and businesses can choose between several electricity or gas suppliers. In practice, many users keep the same contract for years without checking whether it still fits their consumption. The result is simple: a terrace heater may be efficient, but it can still be powered by a contract that is no longer competitive.
Online comparison tools help make this visible. By entering a few basic figures — property size, subscribed power, estimated annual consumption and expected outdoor use — it becomes easier to compare tariffs, fixed charges and contract conditions. The goal is not to chase the lowest price at any cost, but to avoid paying for an unsuitable plan.
Price differences can become significant over a full year. The electricity itself is delivered through the same grid; what changes is the tariff structure, subscription cost, commercial margin and service model. Reviewing the contract before the season starts is therefore a practical first step in controlling outdoor heating costs.
Recalibrate the contract before adding a new use
Installing a patio heater is not a neutral change from an energy point of view. Depending on the model, an infrared heater may operate between 1 500 and 3 000 W. If it is used several evenings per week during spring, autumn or winter, the additional consumption becomes visible on the bill.
A simple simulation is usually enough: current indoor consumption, expected outdoor use, heater power and number of operating hours. This gives a realistic view of the yearly impact and helps determine whether the current subscribed power is still appropriate.
Subscribed power deserves special attention. If it is too low, breakers may trip when several appliances operate at the same time. If it is too high, the fixed subscription cost increases without bringing real benefit. Correct sizing is not complicated, but it is often postponed until the first problem appears.
Gas follows the same logic
For homes or venues using gas, the reasoning is similar. Contracts, fixed charges and service quality vary, and the cheapest offer is not always the most comfortable in daily use. A supplier with poor support can become a problem when billing, maintenance or assistance is needed.
Customer reviews should not replace a price comparison, but they help complete it. For a private user, reliability matters. For a restaurant, hotel or professional terrace, responsiveness can be even more important, because an energy issue may affect service continuity.
Infrared heating: the rational choice outdoors
Technically, infrared heating is one of the most relevant solutions for outdoor areas. A convection heater tries to warm a volume of air that wind immediately disperses. Infrared heating works differently: it sends radiant heat directly towards people and surfaces within the heated zone.
This targeted comfort changes the energy equation. With equivalent perceived comfort, a correctly sized infrared heater generally uses energy more efficiently than a fan heater or many gas patio heaters. The difference becomes measurable over a season, especially when the installation is used regularly.
Small habits that make a real difference
No product can compensate for careless use. Leaving a heater on over an empty zone, forgetting to switch it off or keeping equipment in standby for no reason all increase consumption. Over a full season, these small habits matter.
Outdoors
