How does radiant heating work? Principle, benefits and use cases

Radiant heating works by emitting thermal radiation, in a way that feels closer to sunlight than to a conventional convection heater. Instead of trying to warm a whole volume of air first, a radiant heater sends energy directly towards people, furniture, floors, walls and other surfaces within the heated zone.

This direct heat exchange is what makes the technology especially useful outdoors or in semi-open spaces. Warm air is easily lost on a terrace, under a pergola or in a high-ceilinged area. Radiant heat, by contrast, is felt where the beam is directed, which improves comfort without relying entirely on the surrounding air temperature.

The main advantages of radiant heating

Radiant heating offers several practical advantages compared with systems based mainly on air movement.

  • Less air circulation: heat is delivered directly to people and surfaces, with less forced movement of air. This creates a calmer and often more comfortable atmosphere.
  • Reduced dust movement: because the air is not constantly stirred, dust and particles are less likely to circulate. This can be useful in homes, conservatories, covered terraces and professional spaces.
  • Good performance in open areas: radiant heat remains effective in locations where warm air would otherwise rise or escape, such as patios, outdoor dining zones and spaces with high ceilings.
  • More targeted comfort: the sensation of warmth is concentrated on the occupied area rather than distributed randomly throughout the air volume.
  • Efficient energy use: when the heater is correctly sized and positioned, comfort can be achieved by warming the useful zone instead of the entire surrounding environment.

Low-temperature and high-temperature radiant systems

Radiant heating covers several technologies. They share the same principle, but they are not used in the same way.

Low-temperature systems

Low-temperature systems, such as underfloor heating or wall heating, are often used in new buildings and energy-conscious renovations. They operate over large surfaces and at moderate temperatures, sometimes using water as a heat transfer medium.

The result is a gentle, even comfort with few hot or cold spots. These systems are very pleasant indoors, but they require careful planning, suitable floor or wall construction and a more involved installation process.

High-temperature radiant heaters

High-temperature radiant heaters are more compact. They emit heat from an active surface and are designed to provide fast, localised warmth. This is the category most often used on terraces, balconies, pergolas, restaurant terraces and professional outdoor spaces.

Because these appliances operate at higher surface temperatures, they must be installed according to the manufacturer's safety distances. The height, angle and clearance from walls, fabrics, furniture and heat-sensitive materials are essential for both comfort and safety.

Infrared technology: fast and precise warmth

Infrared technology has made radiant heating more responsive and easier to integrate. An electric infrared heater converts energy into radiant heat that can be felt quickly when the appliance is aimed at the right area. It is a major advantage for spaces that are used intermittently, such as terraces, verandas or outdoor dining areas.

Modern infrared heaters can be mounted on a wall, on a ceiling or under a pergola. This keeps the floor free and allows the heat source to remain discreet. Depending on the model and power output, the same principle can be adapted to a small balcony, a covered residential terrace, a winter garden or a larger professional setting.

Points to check before installation

Radiant heating is effective only if it is correctly selected and installed. The required power depends on the surface area, wind exposure, mounting height, insulation of the space and the level of comfort expected. A heater installed too high, too far away or at the wrong angle will give a weaker result.

Some high-output models also require a dedicated electrical supply. For professional projects, it is therefore important to check the electrical capacity, the mounting supports and the required protection rating before installation.

A comfortable and durable heating solution

Radiant heating is a modern way to create targeted comfort without heating all the surrounding air. It provides fast warmth, limits unnecessary air movement and is well suited to open or semi-open environments.

With the right power, the right placement and a model adapted to the intended use, a radiant heater can make terraces, balconies, conservatories and professional outdoor spaces more comfortable during cooler periods.
