Radiant Heating for Pergolas: Outdoor Thermal Comfort All Year Round
An ideal solution to enjoy your pergola in any weather, without ventilation or loss of aesthetics
Whether attached to the house or freestanding at the back of the garden, a pergola is a living space in its own right. Thanks to electric radiant heating, you can enjoy it in every season, even during cool autumn evenings or sunny winter days.
Why install heating under a pergola?
Radiant heating works by infrared radiation: it heats people and surfaces directly without unnecessarily heating the ambient air. This makes it a perfect solution for pergolas, often semi-open and exposed to air circulation.
- No ventilation or noise: ideal for a relaxation area
- Immediate heat on ignition
- Possibility of zonal heating (lounge, table, reading corner, spa…)
- Discreet design for perfect integration under slats or beams
- No risk of smell or gas: perfect in residential environments
What type of heating for pergola?
The choice depends on the pergola type (open, adjustable slats, side glazing, etc.):
- Very open pergola: opt for short-wave infrared heating (IR-A) to compensate for heat losses
- Semi-closed or adjustable slat pergola: prefer medium-wave infrared heating (IR-M), softer and better distributed
- Glazed or fully closed pergola: long-wave heating (IR-C) can be considered for enveloping warmth
Recommended power and positioning
Here are some guidelines to properly size your heating:
- 10 to 15 m²: 2,000 to 2,400 W (1 to 2 units)
- 15 to 25 m²: 2,800 to 3,600 W (often 2 units crossed or side by side)
- Over 25 m²: modular installation with several separately heated zones
Installation tips:
- Mount at 2.0 to 2.5 meters high for good heat distribution
- Slightly tilt the unit toward the heated zone
- Provide protected electrical supply for outdoor use
- Respect recommended IP rating according to exposure (IP24 to IP65)
Installation under adjustable slats
For bioclimatic pergolas with adjustable slats, it is recommended to install heaters parallel to the slats, between the main beams. Some models are designed to be hidden between aluminium profiles for a perfectly integrated look.
